The Literacy STEM Connection

In this interactive workshop teachers will experience an array of strategies to connect literacy and STEM content, such as word splashes, inside-outside circles, paired verbal fluency, sort cards, relay summaries. Many strategies can also function as formative assessments. How to implement and modify these strategies for various grade levels and diverse students will be discussed.
Specific outcomes for attendees include:
- Acquiring a repertoire of literacy activities to enhance student understanding of STEM concepts, particularly science and math
- Determining how and when to use the activities to assess student progress and inform instruction
- Identifying ways to modify strategies for diverse learners

About the Presenter: Barbara Mammen has over 35 years experience in education, including experience as Supervisor of Science and Technology. Barbara has held positions at Stevens Institute of Technology’s Center for Innovation in Engineering and Science Education, and Rider University’s Graduate School of Education. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education from Pace University and a Master’s Degree in Science and Environmental Education from Brooklyn College.
