Voices From The Land
Exploring language and landscapes, art and culture
Our next Voices from the Land workshop will be as follows: Join us as we continue to grow this exciting network of artists, poets, naturalists, and teachers as we continue to bring children back in touch with nature through language and the landscape, art and culture.
On Thursday June 10th and Friday June 11th, 2010 we are very excited to be taking the Voices project to Texas in the Palo Duro Canyon. This spectacular setting will be our backdrop and our canvas as we expand the Voices project to new locations. Click here for the brochure and application.
Our new teachers guide created specifically for the Voices from the Land project provides a colorful basis for teachers and the students to explore a natural landscape, written and oral language, photography, performance arts, and online publishing software. With a step by step guide to create the best book possible it opens up new areas for exploration like our Paleolithic past and the oral traditions that connect all people.
What is Voices from the Land?
Research shows there is an ancient and intimate connection between language and landscape, a connection that is found in cultures around the world. Exploring the natural world becomes a way to explore the origin of language and celebrate its use in modern life. As students work with leaves, sticks, ice, snow, mud, stone, sand, pine cones….they use color, form, shape, light, shadow, and pattern to create art and rediscover the simple miracles of everyday life. The Voices project invites participants to explore language and cultural diversity, biodiversity and the fragile relationship between people, nature, and the passage of time.
