Gold Satori Requirements
To the Japanese, the highest level of expertise is expressed in a concept call "Satori". The exact definition is subject to many interpretations. The attainment of "Satori" is usually in a sudden flash of enlightenment following a long period of hard work and devotion to a task.
Students who wish to apply for a Satori award must:
- First: Apply to the ROGATE office on or before Tuesday, December 4, 2007 The ROGATE office will not accept application forms postmarked after this date.
- Second: Submit the Satori Completed Requirement Form with all supporting evidence to the ROGATE office postmarked on or before Friday, April 4, 2008 (see requirements below).
REQUIREMENTS
The Satori award differs from the other ROGATE awards by requiring service in combination with advanced participation in the ROGATE program. Additionally, the Satori award requires an individual student to demonstrate an ability to interact with an external agency through a planned, formal application process. Thus, all materials must come directly from the student.
VERY IMPORTANT: Any student who submits an application or any other document which has been prepared by an adult, or who has an adult ask questions for him or her, may be disqualified as a Satori applicant.
TO BE ELIGIBLE FOR A ROGATE SATORI AWARD, A STUDENT MUST:
- Be a ROGATE member in the year of the award application. (Provide copy of welcome letter as evidence.)
- Have received a ROGATE TOWARD SATORI award in a year prior to the Satori application. (i.e. a student applying for the Satori award in 2007-2008 must have earned a TOWARD SATORI IN 2006-2007, or in a previous year). Provide copy of award in portfolio as proof.
- Provide service to ROGATE in the year of Satori application (choose one).
- Serve as a mentor at a Research in the Round workshop. This option is limited. Candidates should call the ROGATE office to arrange for this service, and to get instructions. All Research in the Round workshops take place during the month of December.
- Become a volunteer in the community in a way that uses the student's ROGATE research. Example: A student whose research is about play therapy might volunteer at nursery school or hospital. Volunteering must be related to the topic of research conducted. Permission must be granted by the NTN office prior to volunteering.
- Use ROGATE research as an ongoing part of a community youth organization. Example: Use research as a basis for work on a related scout badge or as part of a related project for a religious group.
- Administer, compile and interpret an evaluation of a ROGATE Academic Interest Lecture. Applicants will be accepted on a first come, first serve basis. The ROGATE office must be notified by January 18th, in writing, of the lecture site and date to be evaluated. Applicants will be notified in February whether or not they may participate in this option. This service must be completed before April 4, 2008.
- Serve in any other way approved by the ROGATE office.
4. Distinguish himself or herself in THREE of the following ways
- Make an individual presentation on his/her ROGATE project from the previous year and/or principles of knowledge gained from the project, to a large diverse audience outside of school. NO PTO or PTA presentations accepted!

Late submission will not be accepted.

5. It is very significant to stress the importance of submitting a professional portfolio.
Proof of completed requirements must be included for each requirement fullfilled. Proof must be submitted on company letterhead (not school letterhead) along with the contact person's printed and signed name, title, phone number and email address. Proof can not come from your school and/or ROGATE Coordinator or student.
