New Jersey Green Ribbon Schools

The U.S. Department of Education’s Green Ribbon Schools Program is a comprehensive recognition program that celebrates schools that save energy, reduce costs, feature environmentally sustainable and friendly learning spaces, promote health, and offer environmental education to incorporate sustainability into the curriculum.

New Jersey will participate in the 2012 pilot year of the Green Ribbon Schools program, nominating up to four schools to the U.S. Department of education that meet criteria in three pillars:

  1. Environmental Impact and Energy Efficiency
  2. Healthy School Environments
  3. Environmental and Sustainability Education

The US Department of Education will recognize schools where staff, students, officials and communities have worked together to produce energy efficient, sustainable and healthy school environments and to ensure the sustainability and environmental literacy of graduates.

Upon review of applications submitted by all states, the U.S. Department of Education will award up to 50 Green Ribbons that meet and exemplify the criteria. Winning schools will be recognized at an annual ceremony.
